Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore is proud to present author Luis J. Rodríguez and his new book It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing on Saturday, October 15th from 5pm-7pm. He will be reading from his book and signing afterward. Copies of the book will be available for sale. The event is free and open to the public.

Luis J. Rodriguez will read from his latest book, the long-awaited sequel to his award-winning memoir Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A., entitled It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing, from Touchstone Books/Simon & Schuster. This book details the intense struggles Luis has had to be a writer, father, husband, revolutionary, and healer, including dealing with addictions, family abuse, and a son who did a total of fifteen years in prison.

Luis J. Rodriguez has emerged as one of the leading Chicano writers in the country with fourteen published books in memoir, fiction, nonfiction, children’s literature, and poetry. The son of Mexican migrants, Rodriguez began writing in his early teens and has won national recognition as a poet, journalist, writer, and critic. He has been a renowned gang intervention specialist in LA, Chicago and other cities, as well as Mexico and Central America. Currently working as a peacemaker among gangs on a national and international level, Rodriguez helped create Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore. A unique bookstore, art and cultural space that began in 2001 in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore continues to make the arts, dance, music, writing, theater, indigenous cosmology, and literacy the centerpiece of an on-going economic/cultural revival for the largely neglected Northeast Valley communities. Tía Chucha’s artistic and educational resources are a much-needed creative stimulus in the midst of these hard economic times. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Tía Chucha’s provides a wide variety of workshops, a bookstore, internet/WiFi access, art exhibits and a performance space. Activities include Open Mics, film nights, author readings, writing circles, musical events, healing circles, and community dialogues. Tía Chucha’s also houses Tía Chucha Press, established in 1989, which publishes quality cross-cultural poetry from around the country; and Young Warriors, an arts-based youth empowerment project.
