Latino Family Drama premieres on PBS

Edward James Olmos, Sonia Braga, Esai Morales, Raquel Welch and a cast of others will be a part of a new Latino television family drama, American Family, which will premier on PBS this coming Wednesday, January 23rd, 2002 at 8:00p.m.

Director Gregory Nava (Mi Familia, Selena, El Norte) has put together an all-star Latino cast, in some ways similar to the cable television show, Resurrection Blvd., but has made it accessible to all non-cable homes throughout the United States.

As Latinos are virtually unseen in mainstream television stations, 'American Family' will at least make inroads to public access television. It may also prove to be a much needed ratings booster to public access t.v. Regardless, it merits at least a look, and hopefully, the show will both honor and do justice to the complexity of Latino families, and not just play out common stereotypes that tend to be 'endorsed' by actors of color.

That, we shall see.
